During the late 70’s and through the 80’s, I made many trips to Haiti, sharing food and clothing; teaching English; sponsoring an orphanage in Jeremie, Haiti; teaching floral design; and helping start small businesses with seed money and inventory.
I always felt I should work hard while here in the States, save my own money and use it to help as much as I could on occasional trips to Haiti. I felt this was my burden to bear. I did not realize there were so many other people who would love to help others, it they had a chance and knew how. Many people said I should ask for help for the necessary projects in Haiti in order to be able to help more people. Everything I attempted to do paled in comparison to the desire to help my brothers and sisters in their misery. Every news report from Haiti, impacted me, of how it became increasingly difficult for people to get out of their homes to buy food, even when they had the money to buy it, due to the dangerous situations there. When you think of the suffering of children, how can anything else be important? When you think of how other moms and dads love their children as much as you do yours, how can it not prick your heart when you think of them seeing their children in misery?
My wife and I discussed what we could do to help. We felt such a heavy burden on us for the children of Haiti that we were losing sleep for them and thinking of them every time we ate a meal. When we finally decided to take the plunge, a great peace fell over us and has been over us since that time, as we have set this work in place. To enable people to make tax deductible donations, we set up a nonprofit charitable organization called Mountain Kids, Inc. which meets all the laws and regulations here in Florida, where we live, and with the IRS. It is a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) nonprofit organization, which the IRS allows donations to it to be tax deductible. It is not a religious organization; therefore we do not work with any specific denomination. Its sole purpose is to help children and their families in Haiti with food, clothes, shoes, school, and health services. We and our organization’s local people, which are Haitian nationals, are responsible for distributing the food and clothes and paying for the school. In sponsorship situations, we will provide photos and a profile of the child being sponsored. When general travel to Haiti, once again, is possible, visits to the schools and meeting the children will be encouraged. Individuals, churches, and businesses can give one time gifts or sponsor children, monthly, to pay for school, uniforms, and food.
This is NOT to replace anything you are sending to any other missions or charities. Our beloved brothers and sisters in Haiti can use all the help they can get. Please post information about this website in your church or business. If you need printed information about this very worthwhile cause, please contact us. This would make a great project for a Sunday school class or youth group to educate about missions. God will bless you! Thank you in advance. We welcome any questions or advice.
